If I I die young, you can lay me down on a bed of roses and such but it is not something that will affect me too much. It is times like this, good times with friends watching volleyball while sipping back a couple of gatorades that will be etched into my memories forever. After all, is there really any other way to spend a good Saturday night?? I don't think so and if there is nobody has shown me! Sure wouldn't we all like to win provincial volleyball, but isn't it the time in between games that really matters?
Wouldn't you rather lose and get closer with some quality buds than win and lose friends due to competitiveness? This is going to be my second last blog and it has been a real pleasure. You guys are the apple to my eye and the strawberry to my pie. It is delicious pie by the way.

The McLurg Broncos have been eliminated by Rossignol. On one hand I feel sad and sorry for Wilkie. It sucks that the host is out this early but they were under a lot of pressure and under the circumstances they did well. That being said I really enjoyed the play of the opposing Huskies. They ran lots of creative plays and were lead by their big 2 hitters. Every time Willkie started to shut the door on them they shoved their foot in the way and said, "Not today." Other than the obvious favorites (Oxbow), I think that Rossignol could be the team to beat!

In this edition of Out of the Woodwork, we will be taking about emotions. Well it will be more of me talking and you listening but it all works out in the end. We are close to starting playoff for the provincial title. To me this is where the real tournament begins. It's a little about skill and a lot about heart. How bad do you want it? That is a question that we will answer soon. I expect lots of cheers and maybe even a few tears. It shall be like a roller coaster. Yes there will be highs, lows, twists and turns but the end result will leave some people green in the face and some people screaming for more.

Sports Played: I have been involved with almost every school and out of school sport over the course of my life. I have had the privilege to play all across Saskatchewan and Canada winning numerous Provincial Championships in the sports of volleyball, badminton, and fastball, including a Saskatchewan Winter Games Gold Medal in badminton. Coaching History: I’ve been around the volleyball scene for awhile, coaching my first sr. boys team in the fall of 1986. I’ve also coached club volleyball, and I coached junior & senior golf from 1998 – 2006.

Sports Played: a variety of sports with my favourite being golf and adult rec. hockey. I played 2 years Kelsey Volleyball in 1982/83 & 1983/84, under the guidance of Court Peddle and Tim Hazen. The following year I red-shirted with the U of s Huskies under Frank Ens & Don Laing. My last year with the U of S Huskies was 1985-86 making the 12-man roster with 1976 Olympian, Tom Graham, as head coach.

I have been fortunate in my career to play with many great players such as Darcy Busse, Kerry Alcorn, Greg Chacalias, Brad Surgik, and Rob Pasishnik. It was also a privilege for me to attend a coaching clinic ran by Garth Pischke, who I consider to be Canada’s top volleyball player of all time.

Provincial History: Making it to Provincials is a big accomplishment for our school as we often find ourselves in the 5A category and are up against perennial power-houses such as P.A. St. Mary’s and Meadow Lake. Highlights for me include our school winning the High School Team Provincial Grass Golf in 2001 along with the Provincial silver medal in Under 16 Club Volleyball in April of 2006 with our Jonny’s Bad Habits Club Team. Another big highlight for me was when our high-school team captured the bronze medal in the 4A classification at Provincials held in Carnduff & Oxbow in 2007. Kelvingotn was unbeatable that year in all classes, while Lumsden was a solid ball club , taking the silver medal. That year, SHSAA nominated our team as the Sportsmanship Award winner, and it was a truly humbling experience for me when Larry Lafrentz from SHSAA came to our school and presented our team with the Sportsmanship Banner. The entire staff and student body gave us a standing ovation. That is one experience I won’t soon forget. I also wanted to thank the many great coaches that I have had the privilege of watching and learning from over the years. In particular, Dale Regal and Rene Quintal from P.A. St.Mary’s. I owe a lot to them for sharing their knowledge and wisdom.

Teaching History: I have taught for 22 years in the areas of Math, Industrial Arts and Mechanics. Currently my concentrated efforts are in Machine shop & Welding which I really enjoy.

Favourite Sport: My favourite sport by far is golf, followed by hockey then volleyball. All of these sports are excellent activities that can be played for a long time.

Coaching History: I have coached for 17 years all in Ille-a-la-Crosse have 3 kids who all

Provincial Experience: My high school volleyball teams have been very successful over the
17 years but have been at a disadvantage geographically. We live too far north to be very competitive at the provincial level, but lately, we have beaten all odds and have advanced to provincials 4 years in a row. My name is Lee Behrns and I have coached Senior Volleyball for 14 years here at Cornerstone. It has mostly been Sr. boys but I did coach Sr. girls for 2 years. I have been to the provincial volleyball championships 5 times, but have never ever won a medal. Growing up I played hockey and fastball and a bit of volleyball, but I was never really a volleyball guy. I have been teaching math at Cornerstone for 14 years and have spent the last 7 as Vice-Principal. My favorite sport is definitely hockey, although I have learned to like volleyball.

Bill grew up in Saskatoon playing basketball and track at Mount Royal Bill set high school long jump records and after high played basketball at the UofS achieiving All Canadian status.

Bill's knees don't allow him to play sports anymore.
